Investment coins and collector coins
Investment (bullion) coins are minted in large quantities and their price tracks gold: Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, American Eagle, Philharmonic or Britannia. They are the most liquid and carry the lowest premium.
Historic coins such as the British Sovereign, the Mexican Centenario or the Spanish Alfonso pieces also carry a numismatic component: two coins with the same gold content can be worth very different amounts depending on condition and mint year.
In Spain, gold coins of 900 fineness or higher, minted after 1800 and that were legal tender, are exempt from VAT as investment gold.
