Cutlery, trays and household silver
Before selling by weight, check whether the piece is solid sterling silver or merely silver-plated (a silver coating over nickel alloy or brass). Marks such as "EPNS", "silver plated" or "alpaca" mean there's no sterling silver and the metal value is practically nil.
In antique cutlery, knife handles are often filled with resin or plaster: that weight isn't paid for.
