How the scrap gold price is calculated

Scrap gold — old, broken or unwanted jewelry — is valued only by the pure gold it contains. The formula is: grams × purity × pure gold price. Today 24 carat gold trades at €114.88 per gram, so one gram of 18k is worth €86.16, 14k €67.20 and 9k €43.08.

It doesn't matter if the piece is broken, scratched or out of fashion: the refiner melts it into a bar and only the metal counts. Design, brand and small stones are not paid by gold buyers.

Example with a real lot

Take a 12 g 18k chain, a 4 g 14k band and 3 g 9k earrings. The pure gold is 9 + 2.34 + 1.125 = 12.47 g, worth €1,431.94 today. An 80% offer would be €1,145.55.

If the shop offers much less, ask which purity it applied to each piece: the most common error is paying the whole lot as 9k or 14k.

Tips for selling scrap gold

Weigh at home, sort by hallmark and remove stones, pearls or steel springs. Take photos of the weight and ask for a receipt itemised by purity.

Lots over 50 g usually get better percentages. If you're not in a hurry, compare prices on different days: gold can move several euros per gram in a week.
