Why palladium swings so much

More than 80% of palladium is consumed by industry, not investment. When petrol car production grows, the price rises sharply; when manufacturers switch to platinum in catalytic converters, it falls just as fast.

Supply is heavily concentrated in Russia and South Africa, so any supply disruption in those two countries feeds through to the price within days.

In jewelry its main use is as an alloying metal for white gold, giving it a light tone without needing rhodium.
