The one-kilo bar

The 1 kg bar is the standard format for investors and small banks: it measures about 80 × 40 × 18 mm and fits in one hand, though it weighs about the same as a full bottle of wine.

It's the format with the lowest premium per gram, typically between 1.5% and 3% over the metal value. In exchange, it has less liquidity than several smaller pieces: if you only need to sell part of it, you'll have to give up the whole bar.

The wholesale market's reference bar (LBMA Good Delivery) is much larger: about 400 troy ounces, close to 12.4 kg.
