24k gold is almost never used in everyday jewelry because it is too soft: it scratches and bends easily. That's why rings, chains and bracelets are made in 18k, 14k or 9k, alloying the gold with copper, silver or palladium.
When you buy a bar or an investment coin (Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic), you pay the pure gold price plus a manufacturing and distribution premium. That premium is higher on small pieces of 1 or 5 grams.
